Some festivals grow into something more than music. Båstad Kammarmusikfestival, held each summer on the Bjäre peninsula in the south of Sweden, is one of them.

I filmed the festival's 30th anniversary in 2022, and what struck me most was not just the music, however extraordinary it was, with performances by the Kelemen Quartet, Christian Ihle Hadland, Jacob Kellermann and others. It was the people. The devoted volunteers who have been there from the very beginning, the audiences who return every summer without fail, drawn as much by the warmth of the place as by the music itself.

Båstad in summer is tennis and sea breeze and long evenings that never quite get dark. In one of my favourite moments in the film, tennis plays out on the courts while Schumann's piano quartet drifts across the scene as a soundtrack. It felt completely natural.
