The project
Sakari Oramo's final concerts as chief conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra were devoted to the music of Jean Sibelius. I was there to film it.
The film follows rehearsals and concerts from spring 2021, capturing a farewell that became something larger: an intimate portrait of the relationship between a conductor, an orchestra, and a composer. Violinist Lisa Batiashvili performs the Violin Concerto, and soprano Anu Komsi appears in Luonnotar. Musicians from the orchestra speak candidly, as does Sakari Oramo's father, Ilkka Oramo, emeritus professor of the Sibelius Academy. The film also travels to Helsinki, to the Sibelius monument and to Ainola, the composer's private home, tracing the deep bonds between the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and Sibelius's music.
And haunting it all: the mystery of a composer so crushed by his own fame that he spent his final decades burning his manuscripts rather than letting the world judge them.
